NBC Sports Boston Ditches Traditional Play-by-Play for Celtics-Hawks Games 3 & 4″

NBC Sports Boston’s Hall of Fame play-by-play commentator Mike Gorman will miss NBC Sports Boston. The Bruins-Hawks will cover the Eastern Conference First Round Games 3 and 4 in Atlanta. In Atlanta, Boston’s Hall of Fame play-by-play announcers will be on vacation. The Celtics would try to win championships in games 3 and 4 against the Hawks without Gorman’s analysis. During the playoffs, Gorman’s passionate and informed calls will be missed.

Sean Grande, a successful radio personality, won’t be switching over either.

In fact, it won’t have a conventional play-by-play voice at all.

NBC Sports Boston has stated that it will employ analysts Brian Scalabrine and Eddie House to call both games rather than bringing in a new play-by-play announcer because Gorman cannot fly while recovering from eye surgery, and Grande is unable to do so due to a prior obligation.

Despite being in his 41st season of announcing Celtics games and having been awarded the Curt Gowdy Award by the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021, Gorman is now unable to travel due to recent surgery to repair a detached retina.

Grande, in his 22nd season announcing Celtics games on radio, has called several games on TV this season owing to Gorman’s reduced travel. His absence from Games 3 and 4 is due to his commitment to Bellator MMA on Showtime.

For NBC Sports Boston, Grande would be an option to call game six in Atlanta if the series goes that far.

Jon Wallach will call the 98.5 The Sports Hub games in Grande’s absence.

Scalabrine and House, both former Celtics players, have called together this season and are getting along well.

TNT and ESPN will carry coverage of Games 3 and 4, respectively.
